EXERCISEJOBS: What attracted you to the field of fitness and exercise?
Joli Bennett, MA, BS: I have always been passionate about sports and activities. When I was a kid, I ran on the track team, studied ballet, and participated in equestrian sports. As I got older, dance became more of a focus. I studied contemporary dance at the Martha Graham School in New York City, and throughout my life I’ve studied and performed in a variety of dance forms, including jazz, hip-hop, African, hula, Tahitian, bellydance, and more. I’m still a runner.
Exercise, fitness, dance, and sports have been such a source of joy for me that I would love to be able to pass along that passion to others. As a coach, I can introduce people to the variety of activities that are available, and help them strategize how to fit them into their busy lives.
The other side of this is that as wonderful as physical activity is for generating joy, it’s equally important for maintaining healthy bodies. Throughout my studies at San Francisco State University for my degree in dietetics, I learned how crucial physical fitness and exercise is in maintaining physical health and function and preventing illness. Fitness is an integral component of any approach to improving health and well-being.

A typical (or not so typical) day in the work-life for you:
Right now, I’m building my coaching and Reiki practice, while working as an art model. So my day might include a coaching session with a client looking to improve his diet and increase his fitness level, a Reiki session with a client who is interested in relaxation and reducing anxiety, and an art modeling gig at a private art studio or an art school.
I am also interested in additional full- or part-time work in the area of fitness, nutrition, and health, doing coaching, counseling, and education, so part of my day is spent researching jobs and networking. I attend as many events, parties, talks, and gatherings as possible…you never know where you might meet someone who could become a client, colleague, or artistic collaborator!
How did you get your current job in fitness and exercise?
I started mojomotion while I was still a student at S.F. State, to begin putting my knowledge and skills into practice with real clients.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
My passion for movement and dance is part of who I am, and I have been very fortunate to have had many teachers, coaches, and friends who were sources of wonderful training and inspiration. My love of performance and my joy at authentic engagement with other people is also something that always been a part of me, as is my desire to see other people be happy, successful, and live lives that make them feel fabulous!
All my knowledge of biochemistry, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and current research in the area of human nutrition and health has been gained through countless hours of instruction, study with classmates, and solitary reading and research. I am always seeking ways to expand my knowledge and skills. Currently I’m studying for the exam to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
If you have a passion or a dream, keep focused on that, and try not to let the inevitable disappointments and setbacks get you down. Remember that each roadblock is an opportunity to go in a new direction towards your ultimate goal. Find things that bring you joy and do them as much as possible!
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
I actually really enjoy doing exchanges, and happily trade coaching and Reiki sessions for a skill or service that my client wants to share. I love artistic collaboration, and as a model I am always interested in working with photographers and artists to create imaginative works of art together.
