About the Role
Asphalt Green is seeking a motivated, knowledgeable, and service-driven Personal Trainer to join our health and wellness team at the Major Owens Community Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
The Personal Trainer works directly with members and clients to help them define, pursue, and achieve their fitness and wellness goals. This role provides one-on-one and small-group training, develops safe and effective workout plans, offers fitness education, and helps create a positive and welcoming member experience in the fitness center.
This is a strong opportunity for a certified trainer who enjoys working with people of different ages, abilities, and fitness levels. The right candidate will bring strong technical fitness knowledge, excellent communication skills, professionalism, creativity, and the ability to motivate clients while maintaining a safe and supportive training environment.
The Major Owens Community Center serves as a cornerstone for community engagement, creativity, and growth. The center offers a variety of programs, from fitness and wellness to dance classes and cultural events, bringing people together in a dynamic and welcoming environment. MOCC is fully equipped with upscale training equipment, including free weights up to 75 pounds, cardio equipment, functional strength equipment, and additional training tools to support a wide range of fitness goals.

What You’ll Do
Personal Training and Client Support

Provide one-on-one and small-group personal training sessions for clients.

Help clients define fitness, health, strength, mobility, endurance, and wellness goals.

Write and execute safe, effective, and individualized workout plans.

Demonstrate proper exercise technique and provide corrections as needed.

Progress or regress exercises based on client ability, comfort, safety, and goals.

Support clients of different ages, abilities, fitness levels, and experience levels.

Motivate clients while maintaining professionalism, patience, and care.

Provide basic fitness education and guidance to help clients build knowledge and confidence.

Complete client progress reports to track progress and support with client goals.
Fitness Floor and Member Experience

Provide excellent customer service and help maintain a positive member experience in the gym.

Engage with members in a welcoming, professional, and supportive manner.

Help members feel comfortable using the fitness center and equipment.

Provide appropriate fitness advice and education to gym users.

Model safe and respectful fitness floor behavior.

Support a clean, organized, and safe fitness floor environment.

Help maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the fitness area and equipment.
Safety, Technique, and Training Quality

Demonstrate the ability to perform and teach training movements and exercises prescribed to clients.

Use proper form, exercise progressions, and regressions for foundational movements.

Monitor client safety during training sessions.

Adjust training plans based on client needs, ability, limitations, and progress.

Maintain current fitness certification and CPR/AED certification.

Follow Asphalt Green and MOCC safety expectations, fitness center policies, and professional standards.
Administration and Scheduling

Complete administrative duties related to planning and executing client workouts.

Track and report hours for payroll as required.

Schedule personal training sessions with clients.

Maintain accurate records related to client sessions, schedules, and training plans.

Communicate clearly with clients and supervisors regarding scheduling, attendance, and training needs.
Team Collaboration and Professional Growth

Work with the Membership and Fitness Manager and personal training team members to support department goals.

Share knowledge with team members and contribute to a collaborative training environment.

Support a team culture rooted in customer service, safety, accountability, and member care.
Strategic Growth & Organizational Collaboration

Partner with the Managing Director and Membership and Fitness Manager to support the long-term strategic growth of Asphalt Green’s at MOCC

Identify opportunities to strengthen participant progression, retention, and long-term engagement within the aquatics ecosystem.

Who You’ll Work With
The Personal Trainer works closely with the Membership and Fitness Manager, personal training team members, fitness center staff, MOCC team members, clients, members, and community participants.
This role supports a broad range of fitness center users, including individuals with different goals, ages, abilities, fitness backgrounds, and comfort levels.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
You’ll need:

Current personal training certification through a nationally accredited industry association, such as NASM, ACSM, NSCA, ACE, or a similar recognized organization.

Current CPR/AED certification.

1–5 years of in-person personal training experience.

Demonstrated ability to perform and teach training movements and exercises prescribed to clients.

Demonstrated ability to safely regress or progress clients in foundational movements.
-
Ability to work with people of different ages, abilities, and fitness levels in a commercial gym setting.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
-
Ability to teach, motivate, and encourage others.
-
Basic understanding of nutrition, weight loss, and general fitness education.

Strong customer service skills and professionalism.
-
Ability to complete administrative duties related to client workouts, scheduling, and payroll reporting.

Reliability, punctuality, maturity, and sound judgment.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
It would be helpful if you also have:

Experience working in a commercial gym, community center, recreation center, nonprofit fitness program, wellness center, or similar environment.

Experience training clients across different ages, abilities, and fitness goals.

Experience leading small-group training sessions.
-
Additional fitness, strength and conditioning, corrective exercise, nutrition, youth fitness, senior fitness, or group exercise certifications.

Experience working in community-based health, wellness, or recreation settings.
-
Bilingual or multilingual language skills.
