Writing For Fitness: Get Paid For Your Words

Writing is a huge part of social media and communication. You can get your message to the masses through the words you put on a computer or in print. According to EMarketer, over 164 million blogs are on the internet and an estimated 133.8 million people read these blogs. Blogging is a great way to get one’s message across, but it is not always guarantee pay. So how does one become a paid fitness writer and what are the steps to take?

#1. Exposure! Expand your portfolio to get recognition. Ingrid Skoog, MS, RD, CSSD, Chair of SCAN, Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group, and faculty member at Oregon State University’s Nutrition and Exercise Sciences Department, gets paid for her sports writing and recommends connecting to the audience through your writing so that you make your words meaningful to the readers. Skoog suggests starting small by writing for a local professional newsletter or newspaper in order to get practice and exposure. The more you have your name out there, the more people will start to recognize you and see your expertise. Blogging is another way to start your career in writing by getting exposure and obtaining followers.

#2. Get The Facts. Skoog explains that different types of articles such as scientific, evidence-based writing can result in more research and fact-checking so you’ll need a certain level of practice in order to be held accountable to the organization you want to write for.

#3. Find A Mentor & Network. Look for organizations, magazines (both print and online), journals, and more that you’d like to write for. Skoog advises to contact an existing writer at that forum and ask questions. Find a mentor in order to find out how to get your foot in the door to start your career. Networking with colleagues who are also writers is a must in order to get advice and suggestions on all aspects of writing.

#4. Ask Your Colleagues. Some writers get paid by the word and other writers get paid by the article. Skoog informs to make sure to ask for adequate money. Do not sell your self short! Make sure you get paid for what you deserve and stay competitive within the field.

#5. Be Open To Editing. Skoog emphasizes to be open minded to editing. Editors will change your words, but it’s important to make sure that you maintain your integrity, standards, and vision without being married to your exact version. Be willing to make adjustments. Skoog states, “a good editor will help you become a better writer.”
