Fitness Career Spotlight on Nate Evans, Self Employed
Meet Nate Evans, certified Insanity instructor and Team Beachbody Coach, whose personal weight loss success inspired and motivated him to help others reach their health and fitness goals, throw out their medications, and loosely wear their skinny jeans. And he gets paid to live his dream! – Sarah What attracted you to the field of health and wellness? In 2010 I made some major changes in my own personal health and fitness. I was the all sport athlete in high school, but when college and work started, I became a desk jockey and my highly active lifestyle withered away. After about 10 years of that, I had gained 70 lbs and lost my confidence, energy, and drive for life that I had always had. After completing the infamous P90X, I had lost 69 lbs and felt better than I ever had. The part that really drew me in was that it wasn’t just a physical change. My entire outlook on life had shifted. I knew that no matter what challenges came up, whatever situations were thrown my way, I had the choice of how to react to it. I finally felt in control of ME!
When I discovered the opportunity to become an Independent Team Beachbody Coach and that I could use that as a platform to reach out and help others in their journeys, it was a no brainer for me!

A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you: Wow! Ok, my days are really anything but typical, yet at the same time, I do have a standard schedule that I follow. So here is a “Cribs” style peek into a day with Nate Evans, Team Beachbody Coach.
5:35 am – Wake up time! Why do I get up earlier now that I am self-employed than when I punched a clock? Because I have studied many other successful people and one common theme is rising early. It gives me time to center myself, do some personal development and start my day in control, not racing the clock.
6:00 am – Time to hit the weights! I workout 5-6 days a week, generally for 30-45 mins. This is something that is core to success also. If I am telling my clients that it is an important part of being healthier, happier and more fulfilled, then I better be showing them it in my own life too! Plus it gets my energy up for the day.
6:30 am – Shower/Get ready for the day. Nothing special here, pretty sure everyone does that. Haha.
7:00 am – Cook Breakfast with my wife and kids. This is something that we have made a priority. I’m not saying everyone should, but it works for us. It’s a great time for us to be together every morning and actually get to talk to each other for more than the quick “good bye, have a great day, I love you” that I was used to when I was rushing out the door to get to work.
8:00 am – This is when my “work day” starts. I generally start out going through emails, messages and texts responding and following up with conversations that I have going with clients and potential clients. Then I check in with our accountability groups on facebook and make sure everyone is engaging each day, and answer any questions that are there along with encouragement to continue with the new changes they are putting in place. A huge part of these accountability groups is just getting people to see that they actually can make a change, and those changes matter. So for that, we celebrate with them in every victory, big and small! I love that part!
After that, I do some general office work like blog posts, recipes and client email check-ins.
12:00 pm – Lunch with my wife! :)
The rest of the day really varies depending what we have going on. Mowing the lawn, running errands, going to the park or school events.
5:30 pm – Time to cook some dinner. We generally cook together, that’s kind of our thing my wife and I enjoy. Then we have family dinner.
After dinner it’s the typical getting things ready for the next day, prepping snacks and lunches, kids baths, dishes and usually playing and reading some books before we put the kids down.
7:30 pm – depending on the night, we will have a few one on one calls with our coaches to go over their week and their goals, then follow up with messages, emails and texts one more time for the night.
The greatest part about this for me is knowing that when there is a “Donuts for Dads” or “Field Day” (like there was today), I can be there with my kids. I don’t have to hope my time off gets approved, or worry about if I’m on the schedule or not that day. I schedule what is important to me. I spent way to many years already working all the time so that hopefully one day I would be able to spend time with my family. One day, is too late and sometimes it never actually comes.
So, there it is, a typical – not so typical – day in the life of Nate Evans, Team Beachbody Coach. Now I’m going to have to ask you to get back to your day. :)
How did you get your current job in health and wellness? On Craigslist! Seriously though, that is how this all started. I was on my lunch break for a job that I absolutely hated, scrolling on my phone through the job opportunities. I was looking for anything that I would actually feel good about doing. I saw an ad that basically said, “If you are interested in helping motivate, encourage and support others to live healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives then we are looking for you”. Obviously it had more info than that, but that really caught me. Because that’s what I was looking for! And if they are doing that for others, maybe they could teach me too! So we set up an interview and the rest as they say is history!
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? I was always a really shy kid. I know a lot of people say that, but I was the shy kid with big ears who turned bright red if I even thought that someone was going to call on me, talk to me or even look at me. That has caused me to really work on being more outgoing, building my self-confidence and realizing that just because I called myself shy, doesn’t mean I am cursed to feel that way forever. It was scary at first to realize the only way to get past that, was to put myself in positions that scared the crud out of me, like agreeing to talk to a large group of people at a University about my fitness transformation. Yeah, I would have turned that down in a heartbeat a few years ago. But I know that success if found 2 or more steps outside my comfort zone, and that makes it a little easier to take those risks.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? Go for it! You can plan it out forever. But until you take that step and actually start doing something, you won’t get anywhere. Just like in fitness, knowing the moves, knowing how your body responds to things differently doesn’t change your body. Action changes things. If you want to become successful as an Independent Beachbody Coach, or anything in life for that matter, take that step and actually start. I had no idea what I was doing when I started, so I just jumped in and learned from who I could. Now, I make sure all our coaches have the absolute best training possible to enable them to hit the ground running, but in the right direction. :)
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? I actually am! Well, yes, I get a paycheck also, but every day I am also paid with stories from those we are working with. Stories of victories in their lives. About how they were able to chase their kids around at the park and weren’t out of breath after 2 mins. Stories about how they pulled out a pair of their “goal jeans” from the closet, and they were actually a little too LOSE! Stories about their Dr.s office check-up and how they have gotten off medications. Stories about how incredibly excited they are about their sister, or brother or best friend as noticed the changes in their life, and has asked them for help! These are the things that still give me chills every time I get to read them, or talk to someone on the phone. That, that right there, can’t be bought with any amount of money. That is the amazing feeling of knowing beyond the shadow of a doubt that what you do matters. It matters A TON! I started out with the goal to be able to be a part of helping just one person change their life. Man, I had no idea that would be like throwing a pebble in a pond and expecting just one ripple to move the surface. That one life, reaches so many more and it spreads so far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. So I guess to sum it up, if I could get paid for something other than a paycheck, it would be with this incredible sense of fulfillment, the fulfillment of knowing my purpose, and living it out each and every day.
