What attracted you to the field of fitness and exercise?
I realized I wanted to work in the wellness industry after I began practicing yoga in college. I was struggling with anxiety and looking for something to help. A friend suggested that I take up a yoga class and I was hooked. Shortly after I took my first teacher training and realized how much I loved holding space for others to practice.
Your Job Title:
Yoga and Meditation Teacher
Company you are with now:
Moxie Yoga Fitness and The Assembly
A typical (or not so typical) day in the work-life for you:
Every day is slightly different but it usually includes a mix of teaching studio classes, practicing some self-led yoga, and working on long term projects at the same time. Right now, I’m working on recording audio meditations.
How did you get your current job in fitness and exercise?:
Getting a job teaching yoga usually means auditioning at different yoga studios with other teachers in a round robin style, which can be pretty intimidating. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I still find it pretty nerve wrecking, but I’ve been lucky enough to be referred to my latest studio, the Assembly. What I really love about teaching yoga is that you can create opportunities for yourself, like acquiring private clients or hosting yoga retreats.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?:
I’m naturally a very enthusiastic person. When I get behind something, I’m pretty much all the way in. I think that lends itself to teaching. If you’re practicing with me, I’m invested in your yoga practice and progress. On the contrary, I’ve had to learn moderation along the way. I used to think that teaching yoga meant that I practice vigorously all day, every day, which simply was not sustainable. That same enthusiasm that helped me be a good teacher was my downfall as a student. So I’ve learned that I need to meet myself where I am.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?:
Teaching yoga is a lot like running your own business. While some time is spent actually teaching yoga, a lot of it has to do with creating opportunities for yourself. If that excites you— do it!
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what
would it be?:
Hmmm— do chocolate covered pretzels count?
