Fitness Career Spotlight on Delilah Bisase, BURN, Health and Wellness Fellow (AmeriCorps)

Meet Delilah Bisase, trainer and inspiration. She’s making a difference in this world helping others (including kids) reach their health and wellness goals. I originally met Delilah at BURN where she kicked my workout into high-gear and made me feel fabulous. – Sarah What attracted you to the field of health and wellness? Since a young age I’ve always enjoyed being active and have had a love for good food. In a move to turn my interests into my profession I got my AFAA group fitness certification and my B.S. in dietetics at SFSU. I’m in this field because I want to get people excited about and have a vested interest in what they put in their body (diet) and how they use their body (exercise).

A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you: I wear a few different hats in this fellowship. Depending on the day, the very beginning of it is devoted to either lesson planning and prepping for the after school program, or assisting teachers in the classroom. Then afterwards is the 1.5 hour fitness block, during which I lead fitness activities for the students. I work with three different groups at 30 minute intervals. The activities are generally centered around basketball, soccer, football, and various relays, and always emphasize teamwork. After my lunch break I return to a mixture of prep for the after school program and classroom support. The last quarter of my day is teaching a farm to table curriculum in the after school program. Throughout the day I work with the grade levels kindergarten, first, second and sixth.

How did you get your current job in health and wellness? I was looking to diversify my work experience by serving a different population, youth. Since the start of my fitness career I had always instructed group exercise classes for adults. Also, as a recent dietetics graduate I was looking for an entry level position in community nutrition.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? Born with flexibility and an innate ability to go with the flow. What I’ve learned along the way- patience and improved communication skills.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? You essentially are your own brand, and every client interaction, class taught, social media post, etc., needs to be treated as an opportunity to build your brand.

In the world of fitness, especially group fitness, we are constantly putting ourselves out there to the public, and something that’s important to understand is that while a lot of people will love and adore you, not everyone will love you, and that’s okay. On that note, relationships are paramount to your success and sanity. Don’t forget to show appreciation for your relationships – clients, friends, and family alike. These are your support systems.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? Vacations abroad.
