Job Description and Requirements

Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that works to enhance the quality of life for children and families in some of New York City's most devastated neighborhoods. Harlem Children's Zone’s 21 centers serve more than 17,000 children and adults every year, including over 10,000 at-risk children. The emphasis of HCZ’s work is not just on education, social service and recreation, but on rebuilding the very fabric of community life. HCZ is primarily known for early and progressive intervention and has been called “one of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time” by the New York Times (2004). The Healthy Living Initiative, a program of HCZ, was developed in 2006 in an effort to combat the growing public health problem of childhood obesity. The mission of the Healthy Living Initiative is to encourage HCZ’s children and their families to incorporate healthy food choices and physical activity into their daily lives. Position Summary: Making sure children maintain a healthy body weight is a priority for HCZ given the staggering rate of obesity in the nation and in the Harlem community. By encouraging children and their families to make better food choices and be more active, we hope to decrease their risk for developing diabetes and heart disease, and increase the likelihood of adopting a life-long commitment to healthy lifestyle habits. The Healthy Living Initiative is currently seeking a dynamic, energetic Part Time Fitness Specialist to join our team as part of a comprehensive health, wellness and nutrition program focusing on middle and high school aged students and their families. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Conducts Fitness Assessments and education for students and their families to assist in the promotion of health and control of preventable disease. • Responsible for providing one-on-one Fitness sessions with parents. • Responsible for assisting with curriculum development and facilitation of fitness based workshops for elementary, middle and high school aged students. • Provides weekly assessments and progress reports on fitness/sports programs. • Provide on-going sports and fitness related materials and resources as needed. • Assist with the planning and management of HCZ sporting events. Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements: • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science or related field experience preferred. • Must have experience working with adolescent population in either a community based organization, health center or school-based setting. • Strong computer, organizational, written and verbal communication skills. • Position requires extensive field work and flexible hours. • Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of populations served.
